if you have a creature with Expend 4 and trigger it by spending your 4th mana in a turn, you wont trigger it again when you spend your 8th
That makes Recoil one of those cards that has a hard time being bad until the point when your opponent has extra lands they can hold in their hand in order to discard them, at which point most decks that run Recoil are either using that as an excuse to crank up the discard engine or more likely happy enough to have survived this long that they don't care
In a similar vein, Expert Judge X brings up an excellent advanced technique in this category: the dance of having the Spray. Here, upper-level SP players use several ploys to trick their opponents into thinking that they either do or do not have a Power Spray
