The latter ensures you dont accidentally play a card that has already been played, but its also a huge factor in how you earn points in the game since you need to think about setting up a big line of tokens in addition to winning tricks
Playing a creature will usually put you in a poor spot against removal, whereas removing the threat puts the onus on your opponent to present another one
