Unfortunately it wont activate its copying ability the turn it transforms, but an extra source of this effect and a little bit of advantage beforehand makes it just as valuable overall

As long as you have enough artifact ramp or mana dorks, you can pay the cumulative upkeep cost for quite some time before having to sacrifice it

The Tusker is a common dork that cycles at instant speed for three mana to draw and tutor a basic into your hand

So cards like Command Beacon (not in this year's decks, but still a popular option) can fetch either one of your commanders, but not both
