It has the advantage of being able to deal with everything, and pretty much has 4 free counterspells as well as 2 1-mana spot removal and 2-3 good 1-mana counterspells, on top of 3+ solid 2 mana counterspells

While these abilities on their own are good, the fact that you can effectively cast The Wandering Emperor as a combat trick makes them incredibly powerful

Using spot removal on Avenger will certainly slow down the death but having so many tokens left over is usually too much value for those kinds of decks to beat

Its place here is pretty "duh" since it's so beloved
