You had to find a way to buff damage high enough to kill in two to three hits (Blackblade Reforged was a huge pickup back in the day!), you had to find Protection and Haste for your Commander as it was definitely going to be removed 3 or more times in a game, and you had to do this with comparatively limited access to card draw and ramp, at least compared to today, and at least if you werent playing Rafiq or someone else with green and blue

I have not played D&D but it is a team game and so one presumes cards like this are interesting because it injects the necessary random into the experience and because your team can cover when things go awry
Lingering Souls is a great card in Modern, but it doesnt slot in naturally to the Spirit package provided by the Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon Spirits
